Literally everywhere I went this week I was bombarded by diet talk, diet culture, weight talk, and body bashing. Maybe it’s the time of year, but honestly I don’t think so. Diet culture is literally everywhere you turn. And if you’re on a journey to letting go of dieting and accepting your body, you probably feel like a complete outsider. You probably feel like no one understands what you’re doing. You probably regularly question if it’s even the right thing because it’s so different from the way most of the people in your life are living. For a lot of women, this is the hardest part of the journey. That’s why surrounding yourself with messaging and other people that aligns with your values is so integral to the process of finding a healthy relationship with food and your body. So that when someone at the office tries to convince you to do keto or intermittent fasting or 75 hard with them you feel really confident when you say thanks but no thanks. One easy way to start is by editing and curating your social media feed. But if you’re feeling stuck, questioning if it’s all worth it, or want someone in your life who can cheer you on and pick you up when it feels hard, that’s where I come in. As part of my UNDIET method coaching program, you not only meet with me on a weekly or biweekly (your choice!) basis so I can help guide your journey and make it easier, but you also have access to me in between visits for those times when it just feels so hard and no one understands. For when you go to the doctor and they tell you to try X diet to lose weight. Or when your hairdresser just wants to talk about her latest diet and that’s triggering to you. Or when your physical therapist tells you that carbs are bad and Americans eat too many of them. Or when your fitness instructor can’t stop talking about building summer abs. I start every day with coffee. So I’m not here t I start every day with coffee. So I’m not here to tell you to give up your morning coffee (coffee is life, thank you very much). But if that’s all your having until lunch, and you’re experiencing a lot of food cravings or you feel like you can’t stop eating from 3pm until you go to bed (or after dinner), then you need to rethink your “breakfast.” Cravings or constant snacking/feeling out of control in the evenings/feeling hungry all the time is a sign that something is off. Diets like intermittent fasting have many people convinced we don’t need breakfast. But I’ve seen over and over again how skipping breakfast (or eating too little at breakfast) can wreck havoc on your whole day of eating. Not hungry in the morning? That’s usually a sign of a slowed metabolism. Not a sign your body doesn’t need to eat. You may have trained your body not to ask for food in the morning, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need it. If eating in the morning is hard, start slowly and with something small. Your appetite will come back. Just yesterday a client, who I’ve been working with for a month told me that for the first time ever she felt hungry for breakfast! Just 4 weeks of shifting her eating and her body as responded. She’s also experiencing fewer afternoon cravings and feels less crazy around food at night. Just from eating the right breakfast for her. Not sure what to eat or how to get started? I hear from so many women that they just don’t e I hear from so many women that they just don’t enjoy exercise. They never have. I get it. When exercise has one purpose…to shrink your body…of course you’re not going to enjoy that. But what would you do to move your body if it wasn’t to change its size? How would you move if exercise was instead to: - Celebrate the body you have - Connect with other women - Find community - Challenge yourself in new ways - Build strength and confidence - Feel more alive - Feel more in control of your emotions - Have more patience with your kids Would you… - Dance? - Walk? - Jump rope? - Hula hoop? - Ride a bike outside? - Go for a hike in the woods? - Ice skate? - Ski? - Run? You don’t have to go to a gym to get the benefits from exercise. And you never know - maybe you’d enjoy something like running or a spin class if there wasn’t so much pressure to lose weight but instead just to enjoy yourself and feel free. Just sayin’ 😉
