5 Minute Healthy Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip

Spread the love

This easy, healthy cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip packs in 17 grams (g) of protein per serving for a snack-sized portion or 34g if you eat it for lunch. Unlike traditional buffalo chicken dips, which are served hot and tend to be high in calories and fat, this is a cold version that comes together in just 5 minutes.

It’s perfect for an impromptu summer gathering by the pool, an afternoon snack on a hot day, or even as the main protein source on your snack plate lunch or dinner (check out 15 other snack plate meal ideas here!).

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This is a cold, creamy, tangy dip for the cottage cheese lovers. It isn’t one of those recipes where cottage cheese sneaks in for protein but the taste is hidden (like my high protein pancakes).

You taste the cottage cheese here, and that’s the point. Think of it as a cottage cheese dip with the elements of buffalo chicken, not the ooey-gooey baked dip you’ll find at Super Bowl parties. It’s cold, it’s fast, and it’s built to be a filling, nutritious snack or part of a snack plate meal.

  • Ready in 5 minutes. Just mix and serve.
  • Filling. With 17g of protein per snack-sized serving, it will keep you full all afternoon.
  • Make-ahead friendly. Tastes even better after the flavors meld in the fridge.
  • The heat is flexible. Love spicy buffalo flavor? Just add more wing sauce!
  • Perfect for warm weather. A cold dip for pool days, picnics, and hot afternoons when you don’t want to turn on the oven.

What Makes this Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip Healthy?

This dip is made with simple, nutritious ingredients. It’s:

  • High protein. Each snack-sized serving contains 17g of protein (34g if you make it your lunch), from the cottage cheese and shredded chicken. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, keeping you full and your blood sugar stable all afternoon. It’s perfect for preventing afternoon chocolate cravings or nighttime pantry raids
  • Contains probiotics. I use Good Culture 4% for the best flavor and texture, but it also contains live active cultures (aka probiotics) that support gut health.
  • Contains key vitamins and minerals. The cottage cheese adds calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and B vitamins to your dip. Plus the herbs add a dose of antioxidants which are linked to lowering inflammation and other health benefits.

How to Make this Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip

This literally comes together in 5 minutes and requires zero cooking. You need just 5 ingredients:

  1. Cottage cheese. I recommend Good Culture’s 4% fat. It has the best texture and flavor. But any cottage cheese you like works!
  2. Shredded chicken breast (see FAQs below for more)
  3. Buffalo wing sauce. I’ve used both Lillie’s Q and Frank’s Red Hot — both work well!
  4. Ranch seasoning.
  5. Chopped dill & chives

Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl and serve with crackers, tortilla chips, or fresh cut veggies.

FAQs

What kind of chicken do you use?

I use pre-shredded rotisserie chicken (to make it super easy) or I cook some chicken breasts in the crockpot on high for 3 hours with a little salt and pepper and then shred.

You only need a ½ cup of chicken for this recipe, so if I’m cooking chicken, I’ll use the rest for tacos, quesadillas, or to add to soup or chili.

Can I blend the cottage cheese?

I leave mine as-is for a thicker, more rustic dip. If you don’t like the texture of cottage cheese, you can pulse it in a food processor first, but it will become a much thinner dip. I’d definitely recommend choosing a full-fat thick cottage cheese brand for this.

I’m lactose intolerant. What can I use instead?

Choose lactose-free cottage cheese. Good Culture and Green Valley both make a good one, and they work exactly like regular cottage cheese here with the same creamy texture and protein. Since the dip has no other dairy beyond the cottage cheese, that single swap makes the whole recipe lactose-free.

How long does cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip last?

Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. You may need to give it a quick stir before serving if you’re using a more liquidy cottage cheese.

Can I freeze it?

I don’t recommend freezing this dip. Dairy-based dips like this get grainy and watery once thawed, so it’s best made fresh and eaten within a few days.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Yes! This is a great make-ahead dip. It actually tastes better after an hour or two in the fridge as the ranch seasoning and buffalo sauce meld together.

How spicy is it, and can I make it milder?

The heat comes entirely from your buffalo sauce, so it’s easy to control. Use less sauce for a milder dip, or add more if you like a lot of heat.

What do you serve with cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip?

Crackers, tortilla chips, pita chips, celery, carrots, cucumber rounds, or bell pepper strips.

If you’re eating it for a meal you can ever use it as a topper for sourdough toast.

Can I use dried herbs instead?

You can absolutely use dried chives and dill, but you’ll need a lot less. I personally find the fresh to add more flavor, but dried works, too.
