The Best Healthy Beach Snacks According to a Dietitian and Mom
As a dietitian and mom of 2, healthy snacks are always on my mind—both for me and my kids! Not only does it seem like my kids ask for snacks 24-7, but I also know that I need snacks between meals to keep my blood sugar stable, my energy consistent, and my cravings at bay.
Whether we’re headed to the beach, pool, or on another summertime adventure, there are certain snacks I’ll always have on hand.
Healthy Beach or Pool Snacks Paired with Convenience
As a mom who will undoubtedly be juggling multiple bags, I’m thoughtful about what I’m committing to carrying. Ideally beach snacks are:
- Portable (love individually packaged items here)
- Easy to open
- Something everyone will eat and be excited about
- Light (no heavy containers for beach walking)
- Won’t melt (leave the chocolate at home)
- Offers a balance of nutrients — while also being fun (see below!)
If we’re packing a cooler, we have more options for fruits and perishable items, but I do try to keep most of our snacks non-perishable in case we don’t have room in the cooler, or want to skip it altogether.
Building a Balanced Beach Snack
The problem with most packaged snacks—especially those made for kids— is that they tend to be high in refined carbohydrates and added sugars, and low in protein, fiber and fat. This leads to a quick energy boost and an even faster crash.
This can perpetuate the cycle of hunger and cravings in adults, and constant snack requests from kids (if you know, you know). That’s why choosing balanced snacks is key to keeping both kids and adults happy and satisfied.
A balanced snack contains
- Protein
- Fiber-rich carbs
- Healthy fat
When possible, I also try to include a source of produce (which sometimes can count as the carb).

The Best Healthy Beach and Pool Snacks (Packaged & Non Perishable)

Harvests Snaps
With 5g protein and 3g fiber per serving, these are a favorite crunchy snack in our house and a great alternative to chips and pretzels. They’re made from green peas and come in a variety of flavors— my favorite are white cheddar and black pepper.
Hippeas Baked Chickpea Puffs
Made from puffed chickpeas, these are another crunchy salty snack that pack in protein and fiber. The single-serve bags are a beach bag staple, and come in 3 delicious flavors.
The Only Bean Dried Edamame
One single-serve bag of these dried edamame contains 12g of protein and 5g of fiber, which will help keep you full and satisfied—and your cravings at bay. With 5 flavors to choose from, there’s an option for everyone.
Solely Fruit Snacks & Jerky
These are actually fruit snacks—made just from dried fruit with no added sugar. My kids are obsessed and I feel great about offering them. Pair with another protein-rich option from this list like Chomps or dried edamame for a balanced and more filling snack.

Chomps Beef & Turkey Jerky
These meat sticks pack 10g of protein into a perfectly portable package (or 4.5g for the complings, which are great for little eaters).
Unlike many processed meat snacks, they’re made without added nitrates or nitrites and with no added sugar. My kids and I love them, and they’re a great way to add staying power to any of the carb-based snacks on this list.
Bada Bean Bada Boom Snacks
Roasted broad beans have 6g of protein and 4g of fiber per single-serve bag! These satisfy a crunchy craving while actually keeping you full. They come in both sweet (like cinnamon) and savory (like buffalo or zesty ranch) flavors, so there’s an option for everyone.

Skinny Popped Popcorn
Popcorn is a whole grain (yes, really!), making it a fiber-rich alternative to chips, pretzels, or goldfish. The individual bags are perfect for a beach or pool bag.
Note: popcorn is a choking hazard for kids 4 and under, so this one’s for the adults and bigger kids.
Wonderful Pistachios
Pistachios are perfectly packaged balanced snacks with protein, fiber, and healthy fats. These individual packs are beach and pool friendly because they’re light, don’t take up much space, and don’t leave you with extra nuts floating all over your bag.
88 Acres Banana Bread Protein Bars
I love that these protein bars are bars made from real food—no added protein isolates or alternative sweeteners. The 12g of protein comes from pumpkin seeds (plus, they’re nut-free if allergies are a concern in your crew).
The banana bread flavor is great for the beach because it doesn’t include chocolate (no melty mess), but if you’re packing a cooler, their chocolate brownie flavor is another favorite in our house.
Joolies Date Pops
These cinnamon bun date “pops” taste like a treat, but have no added sugar and just a few whole-food ingredients. They’re perfect to satisfy a sweet craving and won’t melt in the sun.
Skinny Dipped Sweet & Salty Cashews
These lightly coated cashews feel like a treat while the protein and healthy fats give you stable energy. A small handful satisfies a sweet craving without the crash.
My kids love these too, and it’s a great way to help them eat more nuts, which are packed with healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals!
Note: whole nuts are a choking hazard for kids 4 and under.
Cape Cod Potato Chips
Ok, these don’t exactly scream “healthy,” but they’re nostalgic for me, and a kid favorite. I grew up eating Cape Cod potato chips on the beach every summer, and there’s something about sharing this tradition with my kids that just feels right.
Not every snack has to be nutritious. Some can truly be to nourish your soul.
The Best Healthy Beach and Pool Snacks (Cooler Required)

Watermelon Triangles
Is there anything more quintessential summer than watermelon? I love packing these because not only do my kids love watermelon (so do I), but it helps with hydration on a hot day. Plus, who cares if they drip all over the sand or pool deck?
I like to store in large Stasher bags for a light, plastic-free container.
Little Sesame Hummus Cups
I love the creamy texture and flavor of this hummus. The kids cups (which can still be enjoyed by adults) pack in 5g of protein and 3g of fiber per pack, and their protein hummus cups contain 10g of protein and 3g of fiber per pack. Pair with pretzels, pita chips, or veggie sticks for an easy balanced snack.
I get them at Whole Foods or Target.
String Cheese
String cheese is an easy, portable, protein-rich snack that most kids will happily eat. Pair it with fruit or crackers for a more balanced (and filling) combo.
Mom tip: if your kid is skeptical about string cheese, make it into an “octopus” by stringing 8 legs and then flip it over and wiggle it.
Fresh Cherries
Another mom and kid favorite — but messy so the beach is a perfect place for them.
This cherry pitter has made eating cherries so much easier (especially for kids) , and my kids love to use it. Have them help pack the cooler!
Peaches, Nectraries, and Plums
Quick and easy produce that’s refreshing and hydrating on a hot day. No cutting, no containers. Just rinse and toss them in the cooler.
Sargento Balanced Breaks
An easy portable snack that feels like a charcuterie board, but takes zero effort—and contains a mix of protein, fiber, and fat.
Final Thoughts on Healthy Beach Snacks
Healthy snacking at the beach or pool doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful.
My biggest tip is to aim for balance, but don’t forget fun. A snack bag that includes something nutritious and something you and your kids are genuinely excited about will keep everyone happy.
You can eat well, feel good, and have fun foods all at the same time.
